 Around 1900 railroad workers would begin to settle an area of Southwest Kershaw County, SC as The Seaboard Coastline Railroad made it's way through South Carolina. As the railroad progressed the area became known as Blaney, named so for a banker who helped fund the railroad. The town of Blaney officially chartered and incorporated on January 23, 1908.

 In 1962 Sen. John West, the Blaney town attorney, was in his second term and had failed to bring any new industry to Kershaw County, SC. He was put in touch with management of the Elgin National Watch Company in Elgin, Illinois and brought the Elgin team to Blaney. They were impressed with all the available land and the fact that the town was close to Columbia, SC which the Elgin team felt would provide a strong labor force. While working on incentives to bring the company to the town, the name was eventually changed to Elgin, SC.

 In March of 1963 the plant was dedicated and there were more than 200 people employed there. The success of the company did not last however, and the company announced that it would be going out of business in 1967. While the town of Elgin, SC lost the Elgin Watch Company, they kept the name.

 Today Elgin, SC remains a small mostly rural town, however there has been growth and development in recent years. With new home communities underway and continued success of highly desired Golf Course community Wood Creek Farms, it appears that Elgin, SC still has room to grow.
